The Challenge:
How do you improve the quality and instructional effectiveness of technical presentations given by engineers and technical marketing specialists at a prestigious and industry-leading conference? That was the question posed to The Training Alliance by Sun's JavaOne Conference training manager. With the JavaOne 2001 Conference already in the planning stages, The Training Alliance leaped into the fray and began designing.
The Solution:
The solution was very complex and affected the Call for Proposals, description of topics, Speaker Resource Kit, presentation guidelines, speaking tips, presentation practice, evaluation of session effectiveness, and overall conference satisfaction. We designed a web site for the Speaker Resource Kit and a database to support the presentation review process. Every presentation was reviewed by a trained Training Alliance reviewer and judged against a list of criteria. Speakers who didn't score 80% on the scorecard had to revise and resubmit their presentations. The Training Alliance provided speaker coaching on site at the conference for presenters who had last minute jitters or who simply wanted to practice and get some feedback.
The Results:
Sun was happy with the solution and presentation quality improved. The result was added value for the attendees. In an effort to continuously improve, Sun requested The Training Alliance to assist with the Call for Proposals and topic descriptions for the 2002 Conference. Additionally, we increased the pass level for the presentations to 90%. It was decided to actively market speaker coaching on the JavaOne web site and an online calendar was made available so speakers could select their practice time in advance of the conference.
